Why We Homeschool

My husband and I home school because we want our children to be different than the world. We want them talk different, look different, act different, and most importantly to be distinctly different in how they think. This is only possible if what we put into them is divergent from that which the world would put into them. We can school our children at home and yet it is possible to produce exactly the same results as the world. The difference between our children and the children down the street is only what they are being fed. All children are sinful no matter where they are schooled. All parents are sinful no matter what educational choices they make for their children.

Our choice of school materials; I choose materials that proclaim Christ and his character. I know many schools offer free curriculum but this material is secular in nature. I would not use a science text that did not proclaim Christ as the creator of the world and actively promoted the bible as a reliable text. We combat a secular world view every time we enter the public arena. Museums, exhibits, science centers, even national parks deny the existence of God's creation. If I did not feed my children the truth and provide them with bible evidence to support those truths they would not have the knowledge to defend their faith. The world would lead them to doubt the scripture. The same could be said for how we teach History. God is the author of history and His book, the bible is an accurate historical text that modern day science and archaeology have never proven false. I would not use a history text that chose to ignore the bible in its documentation.

Our choice of media; The media has an agenda and it is not to teach our children how to think like Christ. There are very few secular media shows that do not promote all the wrongs things. Programing includes the sexualization of children, the stupidity of adults, immorality, profanity, violence, marketing and normalizes behavioral choices that are scripturally unacceptable. These same values are promoted in books, magazines and music. It is alot of work to research and stay ahead of the culture in these areas. I can not count the number of times that I thought something would be okay because it was rated pg or recommended. I have been shocked more than once. It always pays off to be cautious in these areas.

Even making all the right choices in the above areas does not guarantee that our children will not have sin issues in their lives or that they will not be influenced by culture. Ultimately at some point our children still have to make the choice to follow Christ for themselves.
