The Iowa Nanny State

The Iowa legislature has been busy lately. They wasted no time upon the election of Chet Culver in setting forth their agenda. Not the public agenda designed to achieve election but rather the agenda as set forth by the democartic platform. The agenda that no one really bothers to read because we are a lazy society who chooses to not think for ourselves but rather to accept, at face value, the words that are spoken by liars and men who lack moral fiber and character. So what have they been busy doing?

Yesterday the legislature spent the day debating an antibullying bill designed to protect children from bullies when they are in school. No one addresses why there are bullies in school or why the situation has digressed to the point that the legislature needs to involve itself. Why aren't the teachers and principles and administrators being held accountable for creating environments in which this type of behavior is occuring. What exactly is passing a bill going to do? Further more the wording of the bill would seem to indicate the creation of a special class of student who seems to deserve more protection than anyone else. If your child is confused about his sexuality then he will be protected but his band playing neighbor with a pocket protector can continue to be picked on as per the norm?

There is also talk in the legislature about requiring all teachers to be members of the teachers union in order to teach in the state. Believe it or not there are great teachers out there with moral fiber who choose, based on religious or other objections, that they can not in all conscious give their money to support the teachers unions agendas. Apparently this is no longer acceptable. Iowa would not longer be a right to work state.

Not to stop there the legislature is now trying to decide if they should raise the mandatory school attendance age from 16 to 18. If you choose not to go to school after 16 you will not be able to have a drivers license and not only will you be a drop out but you won't be able to work either because you won't have any way transport yourself to a job. The school and teachers union continue to subscribe to the college fallacy. The one that says all children should graduate from a standard high school curriculum and go to college. If this is not the path you take, well then you will not be successful in life.

This is no longer the age of individuality and personal accountability. It is the age of the nanny state.
